Akzo Nobel provides products for Canada's landmark LNG project

The largest liquid natural gas (LNG) project in Canada's history is underway in British Columbia, and Akzo Nobel is providing customized protective coating solutions for this landmark facility. The Canadian LNG project is located in Kitimat and will have four processing units with a total production capacity of 28 million tons per year. This is an important step for the country's energy industry. The company is providing Chartek series coatings for the first phase of construction, which includes the construction of 35 core modules in China.

The liquefied natural gas provided by the new facility has the least carbon dioxide emissions per ton. It will be shipped to Asian countries, mainly China and Japan.

"We are very pleased to participate in this magnificent global project, which will ultimately benefit thousands of new energy users in Asia," said Sheng Daan, head of AkzoNobel's marine and protective coatings business in Greater China. This is leading to a substantial increase in new projects.

Due to the accelerated application of new energy in power plants, factories and home heating, China's LNG consumption continues to grow. In fact, China is expected to become the largest importer of LNG by 2024. Forecasts also indicate that by 2040, global annual LNG demand will double to 700 million tons.

Akzo Nobel is fully capable of meeting this demand and has a global team of experts to support the LNG industry. The company also has a long track record of providing performance-based design and engineering for coating systems used in complex projects such as the LNG Canada project.

Once the core modules of the LNG Canada project are completed and painted (it is expected to take about 18 months to complete), they will be shipped to Kitimat for assembly. The coating will provide necessary functions under the harsh environmental conditions of British Columbia, such as corrosion protection, passive fire protection and low temperature protection.

"With our industry-leading coating technology, products, services and engineering expertise in the field of LNG, we are confident that we will continue to support the industry's global drive to seek efficient and sustainable coating solutions in the global value chain," Jean- Michel Gauthier, Director of Akzo Nobel Marine, Protective and Yacht Coatings.

Chartek originated from the Apollo space program and is the market leading epoxy intumescent passive fire protection coating. It is the preferred solution for fire protection in the oil and gas market and has been widely specified for offshore applications, onshore refining, natural gas processing, petrochemical and chemical industrial projects. As one of China pressure seal gate valve suppliers, Cowinns cooperated with AkzoNobel high temperature painting.
